Carova Beach volunteer firefighters had a busy month of June with vehicle fires on the beach, responding to two in the past week alone and four so far this summer.
The latest fire consumed a pick-up Monday that was driving northbound on the beach Monday afternoon. The beach is the only way to reach the communities north of Corolla on the Currituck Outer Banks.
Overheating of the exhaust system, transmission and engine is common in vehicles trying to drive through the soft sand above the high tide line.
Drivers should lower tire pressures to under 18 psi to make it easier on the vehicle while driving and help prevent getting stuck on the beach.
