The North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to close N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk between Lillian and White streets to rebuild a dune that was taken out by a nor’easter at the beginning of May.
If the weather allows, the closing is scheduled to start Monday, July 13 and last about 30 days, but work could begin as early as Friday, the NCDOT said in a statement.
Carolina Marine Structures was awarded a $335,630 contract for the project, which will involve installing sandbags and rebuilding the dune.
Repairs in early May included rebuilding a section of N.C. 12 that had washed out and making temporary repairs to the dune to protect the road. Now that permits are in place, crews can rebuild the dune completely, the statement said.
Expect intermittent lane closures through the remainder of this week as crews move materials and equipment into place. If equipment is in place ahead of schedule, the closure could begin on Friday.
Once the road is closed, motorists will find detours:
• Northbound from N.C. 12: Left on White Street, right on U.S. 158, right to E. Balchen Street back to N.C. 12.
• Southbound from N.C. 12: Right on Lillian Street, Left on U.S. 158, Left on White Street back to N.C.12
Nearby residents will be able to access their homes during the closure. Beach visitors will also be able to access the bath house, and local restaurants and businesses at N.C. 12 and Kitty Hawk Road will remain accessible, the statement said.
