A 5-year-old boy from the Philadelphia-area died after being struck by lightning Sunday afternoon on the beach in the four-wheel drive area of the Currituck Outer Banks.

EMS crews responded to the oceanfront area near milepost 18 of Carova Beach south of the Wash Woods area around 4:11 p.m.

The child was transported by Carova Beach EMS via ground across the state line into Virginia Beach. Air ambulance units in the region were unavailable due to severe weather conditions.

He was then transferred to a Virginia Beach Rescue Squad unit and taken to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.

Currituck EMS Chief Chip Melton said the child, who was with family visiting from out of the area, was pronounced dead around 6 p.m.
