First fatality of holiday season reported on area roads

A 71-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Currituck County after suffering an apparent medical problem.

The wreck happened on N.C. 168 near the entrance to the Currituck On The Sound neighborhood around 10:49 a.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Gary Clevinger, who had residences in Currituck County and St. Augustine, Fla., was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine an exact cause of death.

He is the first person to die in a vehicular crash in Currituck or Dare counties during the extended holiday period.
