A holiday tradition started in the wake of a hurricane will again provide a lift to the island spirit while at the same time celebrating it.

Holidays on Hatteras, which will be held Dec. 14 from noon to 5 p.m., will feature children’s crafts, live entertainment, refreshments, holiday shopping and more at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras. The annual event, sponsored by Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic and Hatteras Village Civic Association, is free and open to the public.

“It started as a goodwill event to boost our spirits after Hurricane Irene,” Josh Nonnenmocher, the museum’s administrator said, adding it has only grown from there. “It’s become an island tradition.”

And a welcome one again this year, particularly in the wake of recent storms that impacted the whole region.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to reflect on all the work that went into helping the community recover,” Nonnenmocher said. “It’s just a good way for the community to come out and enjoy fellowship and entertainment.”

This year’s Holidays on Hatteras includes Charlie Klein’s “Winter Wonderland” train display, live musical performances in the lobby, cookie decorating, ornament making and a chance to write letters to Santa (who is scheduled to make an appearance as well). In addition to the museum exhibits installed within, the Burrus Couch Midgett Gallery will feature local crafters offering one-of-a-kind gifts and multi-instrumentalist Bob Waters performing throughout the day.

Refreshments will include Sharon Peele Kennedy, of “What’s for Supper with Sharon Peele Kennedy” fame, serving her famous Hatteras-Style Clam Chowder. Hot soups, chili, cookies and punch will also be available in the education room while they last. Barbara Miller of the Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center will be teaching children a circle dance, weather permitting.

And everyone who brings a donation for the local food bank will receive a 5-percent discount in the Meekins Chandlery Gift Shop. All museum activities are free and open to the public.

Along with Holidays on Hatteras activities, this year’s Hatteras Village Christmas Parade starts at 2 p.m. from the museum’s parking lot before making its way along N.C. 12. Awards for parade participants will be presented at the museum post-parade. Stu’s Donuts’ Barbeque and Dogs Food Truck will also be set up, selling treats in the museum parking lot.

Last year’s event drew 900 people, and Nonnenmocher said he wouldn’t be surprised to see more than that this year.

“It’s a pretty big event for us,” Nonnenmocher said, “especially this time of the year.”
