Significant weekend storm heading for Outer Banks

By on November 13, 2019

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a prediction for a strong coastal storm that will impact the Outer Banks beginning Friday night and lasting through a good part of the weekend.

Maximum wind gusts associated with the storm are currently anticipated to be in the 55-62 mph range from northern Dare County through Hatteras, presenting the threat of isolated power outages. Meanwhile, rainfall totals from the storm are currently projected to amount to anywhere from 2-6 inches.

There is the potential for life-threatening storm surge inundation 2-4 feet above ground level for ocean side Outer Banks in Dare County and areas adjacent to the Southern Pamlico Sound and Core Sound. There could be minor coastal flooding up to 2 feet above ground for areas adjacent to the Southern Alligator River.

High surf, beach erosion and ocean overwash are expected for the beaches north of Cape Lookout. The most significant oceanside impacts are expected north of Cape Hatteras. Portions of Highway 12 could be inundated and impassable at times.
