Three months after it was devastated by the winds and water from Hurricane Dorian, Ocracoke Island opens for visitors today, Monday Dec. 2.

This story in the Ocracoke Observer https://ocracokeobserver.com/2019/11/22/what-to-expect-whats-open-when-ocracoke-opens-dec-2/ offers a good accounting of what to expect and what will be functioning when the island fully re-opens.

Voice reporter Lucy Papachristou recently spent several days on Ocracoke and reported on a community that is working hard on a long and difficult road to recovery—with the help of a lot of generous folks inside and outside the community. https://outerbanksvoice.com/2019/11/25/it-will-never-be-the-same-again/

Some residents interviewed for that story did wonder whether re-opening the island to visitors was a good idea at this point. But there can be no doubt that Dec. 2 becomes another important milestone in Ocracoke’s battle to come back.
