Manteo Elementary Principal heads to Hyde County

By on December 3, 2019

Manteo Elementary School Principal Steve Blackstock will be leaving that post next month and has accepted an administration position in the Hyde County Schools central office.

In an email to the Voice, Hyde County Superintendent of Schools Steve Basnight said   Blackstock will become Director of Instructional Programs and Assessments, noting that the

Instructional Programs constitute Hyde County’s Pre-K-13 classroom instruction and Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. He is set to assume that position on Jan. 22.

“We are honored to have a career educator with the knowledge and experience of Steve Blackstock. I have known Mr. Blackstock as an educator for a long time and have worked with him in both Dare and Currituck Counties,” Basnight said.  “I was thrilled to have an opportunity to help him advance into district administration.”

A graduate of James Madison University, where he majored in music, Blackstock moved to Dare County In 2002 to teach at First Flight Middle School. He took over the reins at Manteo Elementary during the 2015-2016 school year.

Under his leadership, Manteo Elementary went from being a low-performing school in the 2015-2016 school year with a D on its N.C. School Report Card, to earning a solid C and exceeding growth during the 2018-2019 school year. Blackstock was also named the Dare County Schools’ 2018-2019 Principal of the Year.

Dare County Schools Digital Communications Director Keith Parker said Blackstock will remain in his current post until Jan. 21, adding that Dare Schools Superintendent John Farrelly has begun the process of selecting a successor by gathering community input before interviewing candidates. He said the district hopes to name a new principal before Blackstock departs in January.
