First Flight High School senior Zach Hughes has signed a letter of intent to attend NC State and run for the Wolfpack’s Cross Country and Track teams.
So far during Hughes’ high school career, he has earned four State Championship titles, including a 2018 Championship Title in 2A Men’s Cross Country. Chris Layton, who has coached Hughes since his freshman year, said he saw an athlete with natural talent and an interest in the sport that many considered to be ‘just running.’
“What Zach came to realize is that cross country and track is not ‘just running.’ It is a sport that, to compete at the level that Zach competes at, requires practice – technique, strategy and, perhaps, most of all developing mental toughness. Zach has been dedicated in developing his craft and is now considered one of the best runners in the state, with an unmatched range of middle distance and distance events.”
As for Hughes’ time at First Flight and his future at NC State, Layton stated: “NC State is getting a talented, hungry athlete with a lot of mileage still left on his legs. I am proud of Zach and grateful that I have had the opportunity to work with him. I believe his lasting legacy on the First Flight High School Track and Cross Country Teams will be his example to other athletes, that cross country and track is not ‘just running’.”
