Nearly a month after Christmas, it was “Tree Day” on the Outer Banks as a convoy of 24 pickup trucks bearing Christmas trees made their way to Dare County beaches on Saturday, Jan. 18. The contingent bearing our fir-ry friends came from Virginia Beach, thanks to the efforts of folks from Chico’s Pizza and Skimmunity House.

The trees are used to trap sand, stabilize the dunes and add some protection from water. Locally, the effort is spearheaded by Betsy Seawell, the owner of the Islander Motel on the beachfront in Nags Head who goes by the nickname of the Crazy Christmas Tree Lady, and Donny King, chef and owner of Ocean Boulevard on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk.
