First Flight swimmers cruise to Conference titles

For the third straight year, the First Flight HIgh School women’s and men’s swim teams won the Northeastern Coastal Conference swim meet last Friday in Elizabeth City. The women Nighthawks finished first and second in seven of the eight individual events and won all three relays in a dominating performance. The men’s team placed two swimmers in the top three finishers of six of the eight individual events and won two of the three relays.

Top finishers for the Nighthawk women were:  Bri Wilson — 1st in 200 free and the 400 free; Emmy Trivette — 1st in the 200 IM and the 100 breast; Anne Holcomb — 1st in the 50 free and the 100 free; Bella Cooper –1st in the 100 back and 2nd in the 50 free; Maura Trivette — 2nd in the 200 free and in the 100 free; Erin Bembridge — 2nd in the 200 IM and in the 100 back; Hadley Hedges — 2nd in the 100 breast and 3rd in the 200 IM; Laney Dexter — 2nd in the 400 free; and Ava O’Neil — 2nd in the 100 fly.

Top finishers for the NIghthawk men were: Payton Savage — 1st in the 200 free and the 400 free; Tyler Anderson — 1st in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 100 back; Brodie Nash — 1st in the 100 back and 3rd in the 50 free; Ethan White — 1st in the 100 fly; Tucker Crook — 2nd in the 200 free and in the 100 free; Ben Tonnesen — 2nd in the 100 butterfly and 3rd in the 100 free; Evan Wienert — 2nd in the 100 breast; Jack Brown — 3rd in the 200 free; Logan Thiessen — 3rd in the 100 butterfly; Elliot Piland — 3rd in the 100 backstroke; Nick Gardill — 3rd in the 100 breast; and Will Robinson — 3rd in the 400 free. 

Bri Wilson was named Conference Swimmer of the Year, and Nighthawk Head Coach Dave Tonnesen was named Conference Women’s Team Coach of the Year. 

Swimmers who qualify will next compete in the North Carolina 1A/2A Eastern Regionals in Cary, N.C on Saturday, February 1.  The State Championships will be on Thursday February 6 in Cary. First Flight will have a number of swimmers competing in the East Regional meet, but the squad will not be finalized until after the entry deadline passes on January 25.
