Major Jeff Deringer of the Dare County Sheriff’s Office told the Voice that as of 3:45 p.m., flooding conditions along Colington Road have improved somewhat, with between six and eight inches of water remaining on some sections of the roadway. With a National Weather Service wind advisory set to expire at 5 p.m., Deringer note that “We expect [the water] to go down greatly after that.”

The Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor trouble spots along the roadway, where sound overwash created significant flooding beginning in the morning. Major delays were seen in both directions on the two-lane highway, with high water forcing some drivers to turn around.
