Update:

According to Cpt. John Towler of the Kill Devil Hills Police, work on the emergency bypass for the gas line has been completed. But the main line still needs to be repaired, so parts of NC 12 will likely remain closed until after midnight. The road closure now affects a relatively small area – on the south, it will be near East Landing Drive and on the north, it will be in the area the 7 C’s condos near East 1st Street. Vehicles traveling north on NC 12 will need to detour as north and south lanes will be closed.

2:51 p.m.: Kill Devil Hills Police are alerting residents of a natural gas leak that is halting traffic on a section of NC 12 this afternoon. According to Kill Devil Hills Police spokesperson Cpt. John Towler, the accident occurred when a gas pipe was struck by a work crew in the early afternoon.

Police have set up detours on NC 12 and all traffic is blocked off within a half mile of 2nd Street. Repair crews have just arrived on the scene from Elizabeth City, and according to Towler, no evacuations have been ordered.
