But restaurant-hosted events will continue as planned

Outer Banks Taste of the Beach events that had been scheduled for the Soundside Event Site during the upcoming March 26-29 event have been cancelled. But dozens of events slated for local restaurants will continue as planned, according to Dan Lewis, president of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association.

In an interview with the Voice, Lewis said the cancellation of the Soundside events was “not done in a vacuum. It was done in complete consultation with the Visitors Bureau and the Dare County Health Department.”

Lewis added that the decision “was not specifically a result of the [novel coronavirus], noting that “with ticket sales where they were [and] based on the current media environment, we were hesitant to proceed on an event that could compromise our financial ability to sustain ourselves.”

On March 10, Governor Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency in North Carolina due to the new virus, with the state providing new guidelines for responding to the outbreak. While offering plenty of advice on the subject, the guidelines do not explicitly call for shutting down large gatherings.

The three Taste of the Beach events that had been scheduled for the Event Site were Flashback Friday on March 27, the BBQ & Wing Showdown on Saturday March 28, and the Grand Tasting & Bartender’s Bubbly Bash on Sunday, March 29.

The remaining 40 plus events hosted by restaurants will go on as planned. Some are sold out, but you can check on tickets by going to OBXtasteofthebeach.com.
