The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced today that it is suspending the spring sports season until at least April 6, when the decision will be re-evaluated.

The suspension takes effect at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 13. The suspension also applies to workouts, practices and skills development.

A spokesman for the NCHSAA) told the Voice that while the decision was made over the course of a few hours on March 12, “it’s been in the works for about 24 hours.” In that period, concerns about the novel coronavirus have shut down sports competition on the professional, collegiate and scholastic level.

The suspension brings a halt to the state high school basketball tournament. The other affected sports are outdoor track for men and women, lacrosse for men and women, tennis for men, golf for men and baseball and softball.

In the wake of the NCHSAA announcement, Dare County Schools announced it is suspending all out of county travel indefinitely. This includes all field trips, meetings, and professional development.
