Dorothy Jean Hand Wagoner of Kill Devil Hills, March 14

Dorothy Jean Hand Wagoner, 92, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away at her home at Spring Arbor of The Outer Banks.

Born in Gates County, NC on December 24, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Jimmie Blanchard and Leroy C. Hand.

The first schoolteacher to integrate classes in Gates County Public Schools, Dorothy was an amazing woman and teacher. She was business savvy with a passion for collecting and selling antiques. She continued to serve her community as a journalist and as a registrar for Gates County.

Dorothy is survived by a son, James “Lew” Wagoner, Jr. and wife, Sarah of Green Mountain, NC; a grandson, James Heath Wagoner of Brooklyn, NY; and her beloved kitty, Rocky. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lewis Wagoner.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Spring Arbor of The Outer Banks as well as Albemarle Hospice for the loving care shown to Mrs. Wagoner.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no service at this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the food banks serving Dare County.
