Today’s coronavirus numbers – May 20

What’s new today: With Governor Cooper expected to announce an imminent move to Phase Two today, the state has ramped up testing, with more than 12,000 new tests reported today.

  • Reported NC cases – 20,122 (up 677 from yesterday)
  • Reported NC deaths – 702
  • Currently hospitalized – 554
  • Patients Presumed to be recovered – 11,637
  • NC county with most cases– Mecklenburg (2,789)
  • Reported cases in Dare, Currituck and Hyde Counties – 34 (Dare 22, Currituck 11, Hyde 1)
  • Completed tests – 277,603
  • % of cases by age group – 0-17 (5%), 18-24 (9%), 25-49 (43%), 50-64 (24%), 65+ (20%)
  • % of cases by gender – female (51%), male (49%)
  • Number of cases in NC congregate living facilities (nursing homes, residential care facilities, correctional facilities) – 4,495
  • Number of empty hospital beds in NC – 4,876 out of 18,640 total
  • Number of empty ICU hospital beds in NC – 607 out of 3,223 total
  • Number or ventilators currently in use in NC hospitals – 798 out of 3,385

Note: Every morning, the NC Department of Health and Human Services posts updates the number of reported cases of coronavirus. That number reflects positive results from all tests, including the NC State Laboratory of Public Health and all hospital and commercial labs. There may be other reports, from the media and elsewhere, that will include different numbers during a given day, but this is an effective way of tracking numbers from the same source on a day-to-day basis.

    Is North Carolina including antibody tests in with diagnostic tests? This would result in “cooked” data falsely lowering the percentage of positive cases per tests. Several other states have been reporting this way, including Virginia, Texas and some others.
