At approximately 3:00 pm on Friday July 10, Duck Surf Rescue lifeguards entered the water to rescue a swimmer lying face down. Duck Fire, Police, and Dare County EMS units were dispatched to the beach access at Carroll Drive. The adult male was unresponsive. CPR was initiated by lifeguards and bystanders. Duck Public Safety personnel assisted Dare County EMS with patient care on scene.
Despite all efforts, the patient was pronounced dead. It is not believed that a rip current was involved. Public Safety officials urge beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard and to ask surf rescue personnel about ocean conditions near them. Know your limits; if the conditions exceed your capability, don’t swim.
In issuing the release, the Town of Duck says at this point, they have no further information about the identify of the man or any underlying conditions he may have had.
