A release issued by the Kitty Hawk Fire Department on July 20 reports that one occupant and two Kitty Hawk firefighters were transported to the Outer Banks Hospital after a blaze broke out in a structure on Parker Street on July 19. The two firefighters have been released.

The blaze, which erupted during an intense summer heat wave, destroyed the main property and damaged three nearby homes.

Here is the release:

At 2:48 p.m. on Sunday July 19, personnel from Kitty Hawk Fire Department, Southern Shores Fire Department, Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, Dare County EMS and Kitty Hawk Police Department responded to a reported “Structure Fire.” The incident was in the 3900 block of Parker Street in Kitty Hawk.

On arrival of Kitty Hawk fire units, heavy smoke and flames were showing from the front of the home. All occupants were reported out of the structure. A defensive fire attack was conducted utilizing multiple hose lines, bringing the fire under control at approximately 3:50 p.m. One occupant was treated and transported to OBX Hospital for injuries. Two Kitty Hawk firefighters were also treated transported to OBX Hospital for heat exhaustion and were later released.

The home along with two cars were a complete loss with three adjacent homes sustaining fire damage. Investigation into the origin and cause is still ongoing.

This fire event proved extremely challenging given the weather conditions that personnel had to endure. It was only through the efforts of the personnel that responded that no one was severely injured, and more property was not lost. Special thanks to Southern Shores Fire Department Rehab. Unit and Dare County EMS for providing much needed assistance for all our firefighters.

Questions can be directed to the Kitty Hawk Fire Department at (252) 261-2666.

A sobering reminder to never, ever take our firefighters and other first responders for granted. I cannot imagine what it was like that day with the heat index at 116 to be out in full gear and dragging a fire hose! Thank you all throughout Dare County for always being ready to put it all on the line for us.
