Planned Construction Activities for the Rodanthe ‘Jug Handle’ Bridge Project

Planned Construction Activities Period: July 25, 2020 to August 26, 2020

Please note that construction activities are very dependent on equipment and the weather and are subject to change.

South End

  • Work Trestle  Steel Pipe Pile installation will take place for Bridge Bent 40 to Bent 44 (i.e. approximately 1,125 ft. to 1,200 ft. from the shoreline). Track girders will be installed as individual steel pile clusters are installed. Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8:00am to 9:00pm Monday to Sunday. A straddle platform and crane will remove the work trestle from Bent 28 through Bent 32 (i.e. approximately 1,350 ft to 1,375 ft from the shoreline).
  • Bridge Piling – Concrete cylinder piles will be driven for Bridge Bent 37 to Bent 40 (i.e. approximately 1,175 ft. to 1,125 ft. from the shoreline). Pile driving can be expected to take place any time between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
  • Cap Concrete Placements – Concrete will be placed for Bridge Bent Cap 36 to Bent Cap 39 (i.e. approximately 1,215 ft to 1,125 ft from the shoreline).
  • Girders – Girders will be set for Span 34 to Span 37 (i.e. approximately 1,300 ft. to 1,175 ft. from the shoreline).
  • Bridge Deck Concrete Placements  Concrete will be placed for Bridge Span 33 to Span 36 (i.e. approximately 1,390 ft. to 1,300 ft. from the shoreline). These are anticipated to take place at night and/or early morning.

North End

  • Work Trestle  Steel pipe installation will take place for Bridge Bent 87 to Bent 89 (i.e. approximately 625 to 350 feet from the shoreline). Track girders will be installed as individual steel pipe clusters are installed. Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday. A straddle platform and crane will remove the work trestle from Bent 101 through Bent 103 (i.e. on land approximately 1,200 feet from the north shoreline).
  • Bridge Piling – Concrete cylinder piles will be driven for Bridge Bent 92 to Bent 96 (on land approximately 50 ft to 600 ft. from the north shoreline). Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
  • Cap Concrete Placements – Concrete will be placed for Bridge Bent Cap 94 to Bent Cap 96 (i.e. approximately 375 ft to 600 ft from the north shoreline).
  • Girders – Girders are not anticipated to be set.
  • ​​​​Bridge Deck Concrete Placements – Concrete for bridge decks is not anticipated.
  • Overall Estimated Timeline
    -​​​​​​​Pile driving for the bridge is anticipated to be complete in Fall/Winter 2020.
    -​​​​​​​Project completion is currently targeted for Fall 2021.  ​​​​​​​

 

Public Meeting

The next meeting to update the public on the project is currently scheduled for September 3 from 6-8 p.m. Details will be forthcoming as to whether this meeting will be held virtually or in person.
