This 6 a.m. Aug 2 update from the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City indicates that Isaias is currently a tropical storm with winds of 65 mph. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in our area sometime Monday night. Here are some key projections.
Increased swell is producing very dangerous swimming conditions now through early next week.
There is the potential for a few tornadoes anywhere across Eastern North Carolina
There is the potential for localized flooding rain. Current projections for the Outer Banks put storm rainfall totals of 1” or less.
There is the potential for strong tropical storm force winds across all of eastern North Carolina. Some power outages and downed trees are possible. Currently, maximum wind gusts in our area are projected to be about 50 mph, with maximum sustained winds close to 40 mph.
As for potential storm surge, there is projected inundation of generally 1 to 2 feet above normally dry ground (low lying areas near the water that are usually dry). Localized up to 3 feet. It is also possible there will be Ocean overwash on Highway 12 near high tide.
