Body of missing swimmer recovered

The following statement on the fate of the man who went missing on Sept. 7 while swimming in the Currituck Sound was released tonight by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

At 5:20 p.m. on Sept. 8, Mr. Sundara Baskar Pooraswamy-Chinna was recovered from the Currituck Sound.  He was found using a side scan sonar device utilized by Hertford County and Gates County Emergency Management. Once he was brought to the surface, he was taken to shore by the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department.

Mr. Pooraswamy-Chinna was found was in approximately 8 feet of water just inside of Dare County, near the location that he was last seen. After an initial examination of his body, no foul play is suspected. Agencies assisting in the search include Currituck County Sheriff Department, Hertford County Emergency Management, Gates County Emergency Management, NC Marine Patrol, Crawford Township Fire Station, and NC Wildlife.

    This is what, the eighth person that drowned this tourist season, and with little reason.
    More public awareness needs to be done about our waters.

    Steve, I agree that more needs to be done but people ignore the warnings. Perhaps every rental – whether cottage, hotel, or motel room should have a warning posted that Red means stay out of the water – beach or soundside. Stick to the swimming pool. Personally, I think people taking vacations during the pandemic are not inclined to be influenced by warnings.
