On October 6 and October 13, 2020, officers from Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo police departments participated in a joint community event with the Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition to raise awareness about Pedestrian Safety Month. The event was a collaboration with the statewide Watch for Me NC campaign. Watch For Me NC is a program aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes with motorists.
Local officers set up booths at First Flight Elementary School and Manteo Elementary School and passed out information related to Pedestrian Safety Month. Part of the handout included bags with various safety items including slap bracelets, bike lights and glow sticks. Over 400 brochures and bags were handed out to the public over the two days.
With the completion of multipurpose paths along Bay Drive and US 158, the Town of Kill Devil Hills has become a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly community. Unfortunately, collisions between motorists and bicycles/pedestrians still occur. Since 2017, Kill Devil Hills has recorded 26 bicycle vs. motorist incidents and 24 pedestrian vs. motorist incidents, with one of those resulting in a fatality. One of the best ways to prevent future collisions is to raise awareness of safe driving, walking and biking practices that will help ensure everyone can share the road together safely. The aim of these public awareness campaigns is to do just that. For more information, we encourage anyone to visit watchformenc.org.
