Coast Guard thanks OBX community for “goodwill” in wake of Buxton fire

In a release issued on Oct. 26, the U.S. Coast Guard stated that three members of one Coast Guard family remain unaccounted for following the fire that broke out in Buxton in the early morning hours of Oct. 23. Dare County Emergency Management has stated that four people are confirmed dead as a result of the tragedy, but has not yet released the names of those who perished.

The Coast Guard statement also expressed thanks to the public, “especially the Outer Banks” for what it characterized as “an outpouring of volunteerism,” “offers of assistance” and “goodwill.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation by North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Dare County Sheriff’s Department, and Coast Guard Investigative Service.
