The Coast Guard is reporting that response crews and a good Samaritan rescued a man from his sunken fishing vessel approximately 20 miles southwest of Kitty Hawk on Monday, Jan. 18. The man was rescued wearing a life jacket in 46-degree water.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received the initial report from the father-in-law of the individual whose 18-foot boat sunk at the mouth of Alligator River, near East Lake. At the time of the call, the man was on the bow of his sunken vessel.

Coast Guard crews were launched aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small from Station Elizabeth City and an MH-60 Jayhawk from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. The aircrew directed a nearby good Samaritan vessel to the location of the sunken boat. The vessel’s crew was able to bring the man aboard and transfer him to EMS waiting at the Alligator River marina.

No injuries were reported. The man was treated for hypothermia.

“This is one of those situations that could have deteriorated quickly,” said Senior Chief Greg Slusher, Command Duty Officer. “No one leaves the marina expecting their boat to sink. Thankfully, this man equipped himself with a lifejacket and a way to call for help. Being unprepared in water this cold can turn a dangerous situation to a deadly one very quickly.”

20 miles Southwest of Kitty Hawk… … 20 miles, south-west, of kitty hawk… Pardon? That’s in Alligator river, or off East Lake, or near the Alligator River Bridge. What kind of locational description is 20 miles southwest of kitty hawk? About as helpful as saying it was 60 miles south of Chesapeake.

If it was a typo and it was 2 miles, sure. If it was southeast, it would be easier to day 6 miles ne of Oregon Inlet.

The Western tip of East Lake is round about 20 miles Southwest of Kitty Hawk Landing. The article reads that the distressed mariner reported his position as the mouth of The Alligator River Near East Lake. He obviously knew where he was as he was rescued quickly. A chart or map will bear this position out as it relates to Kitty Hawk . I live on the Kitty Hawk Soundside. Thanks USCG and Good Samaritan
