East Carolina Radio’s 98.1 “The Score” and the Outer Banks Voice are pleased to introduce our Student-Athlete of the Week. This feature will honor student athletes from Currituck, Cape Hatteras, Manteo and First Flight High Schools for their contributions on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community. This week, we present Merritt Woodson of Currituck High.
Merritt Woodson is a three-year starter for Currituck’s High School’s varsity volleyball team. Over the course of her career, Merritt has played the positions of middle, rightside and a six-rotation outside. She has honed her skills playing with a travel team out of Virginia Beach for the last six years. At the high school level, she has been selected to the All-Conference team each of the last three seasons. This past year, she was named the Conference Player of The Year as well as All-Area Player of The Year.
Woodson broke the Currituck High School record for kills last season while also leading the team in aces. She was even chosen for a coveted spot on the AVCA Phenom list on multiple occasions. When her Currituck career is completed, Merritt will be playing collegiately at East Carolina University.
Her high school coach Chris Ferretti raves about her leadership and commitment to excellence. “Merritt is an exceptional student academically and she puts the same effort into volleyball,” Ferretti said. “Whether it be her use of a personal trainer or getting to the gym early to mentally prepare, Merritt is focused on improving both her individual skills and her team skills. Merritt’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and she definitely lights up the court.”
98.1 The Score and the Outer Banks Voice congratulate Merritt Woodson on an outstanding career on the court and in the classroom. And we wish her luck when she continues her playing career at ECU.
