Local swimmers shine at State Championships

Congratulations to local swimmers and divers who had strong top-10 showings in the North Carolina High School Swimming and Diving 1A/2A State Championships in Cary on Feb. 12.

Manteo High School sophomore Sophie Benkusky finished 7th in the women’s 500 freestyle with a time of 5:24:68, followed in the 8th spot by First Flight High School senior Briana Wilson, who came in at 5:38:02. Benkusky also placed 4th and earned a medal in the 100 freestyle. Wilson, who was named the female Northeastern Coastal Conference swimmer of the year, will swim for Chowan University in the fall.

And First Flight freshman Gray Miller finished in 6th place in the competition for his work in the 1-meter diving championships.
