Theatre of Dare, community theatre for the Outer Banks, is offering scholarships for local high schools seniors, as well as current college students, who plan to pursue a degree in the performing arts. Last year, $5,000 was awarded to four seniors as well as two college students, previous recipients of ToD scholarships.

“Typically, we raise funds for our scholarships through 50/50 raffles held during productions,” says Penelope Carroll, scholarship chairperson. “As we have been unable to present live productions due to COVID restrictions, we’ve had to scrounge a bit to fill the coffers. However, this particular show will continue to go on.”

Scholarship application materials are being sent to area high school guidance offices. Interested persons are encouraged to apply and may request information directly from Theatre of Dare – by email at theatreofdareobx@gmail.com or by phoning or texting Penelope Carroll at 252/489-1571.

Productions scheduled for Theatre of Dare’s 30th season had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. The final show for this season, The Diary of Adam and Eve, is still on the books for May 2021 and set to be staged at the Elizabethan Gardens. As an outdoor venue, social distancing will be easier to accomplish. In addition, the theatre is in rehearsals for an April online production of The Last Five Years, a musical by Jason Robert Brown, directed by Daniel Ziegler.

“As this region’s community theatre, we feel an obligation to support young people who are serious in their pursuit of the performing arts as a career,” Carroll continues. “Through the generous support of our audience, it’s been possible for us to help and encourage these students.”
