Alert motorist prevents serious Colington fire

On the evening of April 13, just before 8 p.m., the Colington Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) received a call for a structure fire in the 1000 block of Colington Road. Fortunately, a passing motorist saw the fire on the third-floor exterior of the home and called 911 and alerted the occupants. They were unaware of the fire.

Crews arrived quickly as one of the occupants was desperately trying to douse the flames with a garden hose. Firefighters laddered the third-floor deck and continued to extinguish the fire and check for extension.

This fire could have been a lot worse had it not been for the alert motorist who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Thick live oaks conceal much of the house. If the fire had gone unchecked, the outcome would have been much worse.

There were no injuries, and the damage was contained to the outside of the home.

The CVFD was assisted by Kill Devil Hills FD, Dare County Sheriff’s deputies, KDH Police and Dare County EMS. Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs is investigating the blaze.
