This account of a dramatic rescue by Tyrrell County Sheriff’s deputies on Monday night has been posted on the Sheriff’s Facebook page.

“Last night (4/26/2021) Deputy Hughes and Deputy Spence were alerted to an overdue motorist/missing person from Nash County that could possibly have been broken down along US 64. The deputies responded to the area and began searching for the individual’s vehicle.

After searching the area, the deputies spotted what appeared to be a small portion of a vehicle protruding from the water alongside US 64 between SR 1229 and the Alligator River Bridge. With no concern for his own personal safety, Deputy Hughes jump into the water to find that the driver (our overdue motorist) was huddled in a small air pocket in the back window of the car. The deputies broke the back window out and rescued the driver from certain death.

With the help of the outstanding volunteers from the Tyrrell County Fire Department, and Washington Tyrrell County EMS, the driver was brought to land and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Deputy Spence contacted the driver today, and she is home now, resting with no injuries.”

What an amazing story. That is a desolate, scary stretch of road and it is a miracle they found her in the dark. How terrifying to be in a sinking car breathing your last bit of air. These deputies went above and beyond and should be honored for their work. How fortunate her relatives called and diligent deputies took them seriously. When I am on roads with water on both sides, I like to open my sunroof so hopefully I can escape should the need arise. I hope the lady is able to relax and enjoy the beautiful OBX after her ordeal.

Lot of tough news about police activity lately. It’s good to remember they do outstanding work, too. Kudos.
