Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy today at noon funeral services being held for Andrew Brown Jr., the Elizabeth City man who was fatally shot by Pasquotank County deputies on April 21 as they were trying to serve a felony drug arrest warrant.
The services are being held at the Fountain of Life Church in Elizabeth City. Other remarks are scheduled to be delivered by Attorney Ben Crump, family members and local clergy. Members of the family of George Floyd, the man whose killing by Minneapolis Police in May 2020 triggered ongoing nationwide protests, are also expected to attend.
Yesterday, in advance of the services, Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten II issued a statement in which he said that “we ask that everyone respect the family and those mourning.”
He added that, “The Sheriff’s Office will take many steps to ensure that peaceful protestors are able to exercise their rights. However those who choose to protest will not be permitted to block intersections or highways and put themselves and others in danger…we are prepared to ensure the safety of our community in the event of unlawful disruptions.”
