On May 30, the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church (KHUMC) announced the launch of a Little Free Pantry for Outer Banks community members. The Little Free Pantry is located in the front yard of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and provides food and other items to the Outer Banks community for free. The mini pantry is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no questions asked. The Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church is located at 803 W. Kitty Hawk Rd, Kitty Hawk, NC.

According to Ed Kitchen, one of the organizers, “The Little Free Pantry is open to everyone with no requirement, this is about neighbors helping neighbors. If someone needs something they should take it. Everyone needs a little help once in a while.” In addition to non-perishable food items, information on local social services and limited baby care and hygiene items can be found in the pantry.  Community members are also able to donate items and a list of suggested items can be found in the Pantry.  The pantry will be restocked as needed throughout the week. OBX residents and visitors should feel free to visit and take what is needed.

Free Pantries provide the following benefits:
  • The LFP is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • There are no requirements or questions asked
  • LFP is designed to mediate any shame or embarrassment associated with food insecurity
  • LFP is a way for OBX neighbors to give what they can and take what they need
  • The LFP is not as a primary food bank, but is designed to be a supplemental and is a short-term emergency food source

The KHUMC Little Free Pantry is a community outreach ministry of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and the idea of the KHUMC Cornerstone Small Group. KHUMC’s Little Free Pantry was constructed by Glenn Riggin and decorated by Mary Kitchen and the Cornerstone Small Group.  KHUMC is located at 803 W Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
