With the filing deadline to run for the 2021 Dare County municipal elections having passed as of noon on July 16, several mayors and incumbent council members and commissioners have opted not to seek re-election.
In the town of Southern Shores, incumbent mayor Tom Bennett will not seek another term as incumbent Council Member Elizabeth Morey and challenger Rod McCaughey vie for that job. Incumbent Council Member Jim Conners is not running for his seat, so that will be contested by Paula Sherlock, Anne Sjoerdsma and John Carter.
In Kitty Hawk, incumbent Mayor Gary Perry is stepping down as current Mayor Pro Tem Craig Garriss runs unopposed. Incumbent Council Member Jeff Pruitt seeks another term while Chaarlotte Walker and Charles Jones also compete for one of two available council seats.
Incumbent Mayor Ben Sproul is running unopposed for in Kill Devil Hills, where there will be no suspense on Election Day. Incumbent Commissioners Terry Gray and John Windley will face no competition for their seats.
Duck, however, will feature seven candidates vying for five council seats. They include incumbent Mayor Don Kingston, incumbent Mayor Pro Tem Monica Thibodeau as well as current council members Sandy Whitman and Rob Mooney. The council challengers include Joseph Blakaitis, Tony Schiano and James Bartlett. The one incumbent not seeking re-election is Nancy Caviness.
Manteo’s current mayor, Bobby Owens, will not face any challengers in his bid for another term. Meanwhile four candidates will battle for three seats on the board of commissioners including incumbents Eddie Mann and Christine Walker. The challengers are Sherry Butcher Wickstrom and Ruth Jane Stetson. Incumbent Commissioner Richie Burke has opted not to run for his seat again.
In Nags Head, current mayor Ben Cahoon is unopposed in his re-election bid. Two town commissioners, Webb Fuller and Mike Siers, are seeking to retain their seats, while Bob Sanders also competes for one of those spots.
