Another sad announcement, this time on July 20, about a restaurant/food establishment closing, although the reason here seems to be forces beyond its control – a plan to remove the business to make way for a department store. Earlier today, Barrier Island Bagels, located in the Marketplace in Southern Shores, posted this closing announcement on its Facebook page.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to close the bagel shop doors. Plans within the property management group on the future of the center are out of our control and we must move on. Josh and I want to thank all of our amazing staff past and present for the hard work, dedication and loyalty over the years – we love all of you. Also, to our friends, family and customers who have made our dreams happen – we could not have done any of this without you. Thank you from the bottom of hearts, there are not enough words to describe our appreciation. *We are already closed.
“Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be.”
For a clue as to “the future of the center,” Ann Sjoerdsma, long active in town affairs and Southern Shores Council candidate who operates the Southern Shores Beacon news site, reported on July 20 that, “The Town Planning Board yesterday considered site plans for a 24,000-square-foot, ‘off-price’ Marshalls department store to be built in the Marketplace at Southern Shores next door to the CVS Pharmacy.”
Barrier Island Bagels has also just confirmed that story on its Facebook page by noting, “Yep, Barrier Island Bagels is one to be demolished.”
(Editor’s Note: Speaking personally, I absolutely loved Barrier Island Bagels and thought they did it bigger and better than anyone else around here. Bummer.)
