Dare DHHS says COVID boosters available in September

By on August 31, 2021

64% of eligible Dare residents fully vaccinated

The newest weekly COVID numbers, updated by the Dare County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) on Aug. 31, are very similar to the ones from the previous week. For Aug. 23-29, there were 259 new cases compared with 257 from Aug. 16-22. The percentage of positive COVID tests in the past week (19.1%), also varies very little from the 19.6% positivity rate recorded in the previous week.

In addition, there are currently 16 people hospitalized with the COVID virus — 10 of them are Dare County residents and 6 are non-residents. And since Aug. 23, there have been 2 more county residents — both over 65 years of age — to succumb to COVID.

While the 259 cases from Aug. 23-29 make it the third-highest week for cases locally since the pandemic began, in this week in 2020, there were only 30 cases and the percentage of positive COVID tests was only 4.75%.

In addition, 75% of the 259 cases were among those not fully vaccinated and 25% were so-called breakthrough cases infecting the fully vaccinated.

The DHHS also stated in the Aug. 31 update that for those who have gotten two doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least eight months ago will be eligible for a third (booster) shot by the third week of September. The county said it is preparing to host multiple vaccine clinics to administer booster shots in September, October and November.

Since late December, a total of 25,178 (68%) of eligible Dare County residents have received an initial dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 23,542 (64%) are fully vaccinated.
