Dare Sheriff’s Office responds to rumors of multiple drug overdoses

By on September 15, 2021

In the past several days, rumors have spread on social media and elsewhere that there were a staggering 11 drug overdoses in Manteo over the past weekend. The Dare County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that it is investigating a case involving three individuals – two of whom died and one who was hospitalized — who were found in a Manteo residence on Sept. 13. Sheriff Doug Doughtie has stated that there is still no known cause of death in that case.

In a brief interview with the Voice on Sept. 15, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, when asked about rumors of nearly a dozen overdoses, said the department “has not been notified of eleven overdoses or received calls about eleven overdoses.” The department, he said, responded to the residence where the three individuals whose cause of death is under investigation were found.

The official added that even if they are not aware of it, the sheriff’s office can’t categorically rule out that 11 drug overdoses occurred in a brief time period, adding that that if anyone has knowledge of such incidents, they should call the Dare County 911 Communications Center at 252-473-3444 or the Dare County Sherriff’s office at 252-475-5980.

Interesting and heartbreaking. It could be true if the other cases were located in the other towns. Currently the Dare County Sheriff’s office is the only one reporting drug busts and overdoses (though, I wonder if it isn’t a watered down version of the Truth).🤔 The towns, have them (drug issues) just don’t make it public. I remember there were a few in NH two years ago or so. Hit the grapevine but nothing official. Though, KDH too…but most of those come through Sheriff as an assist. I just wonder…how do you plan to address something if no one wants to look at it? So very many waisted resources because people can’t find them or they aren’t available. 💔😥

I appreciate that reporter’s struggle with limited information. The address of the event is missing, if the reported was on scene, it would be included in the article…

This is nothing new. Heroin and crack were rampant here in the 90s and even a couple high school students died from overdoses. Law enforcement doesn’t actually care about limiting the availability of drugs because they know it’s impossible, and it gives them all the excuses in the world to demand even more funding to accomplish nothing but further ruining people’s lives. Doug Doughy’s been sheriff now for a decade and nothing’s changed.

Jeff nothing has changed with the people using drugs either and that is where it all starts. It sound like your blaming the sheriff and the pd for people’s drug problems ?

@Jeff Walker…the one thing that has changed is a massive unsustainable influx of tourists in the 20 years. As more people arrive here we get the baggage that comes with population increases, which in addition to traffic is the riff-raff and dregs of society. This increases crime including drug availability.

About three years ago a female came to my house and gave my son unknowingly a deadly substance he died and she left. Detectives had his phone two months but couldn’t break code.? In my opinion not much effort. Don’t phone statements have the numbers on then. No justice

Mr. MacDonald, I am so sorry for the passing of your son. My hope is that you are comforted in your pain and that you will someday be reunited with your son. drug addiction is a complicated issue and obtaining help and support for addictions can be difficult. Justice is not always attainable in our life time but I am certain that in your life you may find something even better than justice. Every time you help someone in need , give lovingly, you may find redemption and a beautiful legacy for your beautiful child. May God bless you and your family and diminish your pain.
