Today is a special day in the life of a man who holds a special place in the OBX community. Gail Halvorsen, the “Candy Bomber” who has made a habit of bringing his annual candy drop to Dare County during the Christmas season, turns 101 years old today.

Halvorsen got his nickname as a U.S. pilot when he began dropping candy out of his plane to a group of hungry German children during the post-World War II Berlin Airlift. He survived a bout with COVID late last year, and recently, Karin Edmond — one of the young German children on the receiving end of Halvorsen’s kindness who organizes the annual candy drop here — said the “Candy Bomber” is planning on returning to Dare County for the Dec. 19 event.

To honor the “Candy Bomber’s” birthday, the Gail S. Halvorsen Aviation Foundation has posted information on its Facebook page about a special auction of some special items they are holding on Oct. 10.
