The Manteo High School Athletics Department has confirmed that Freddie “Sport” Sawyer resigned on Nov. 1 as the head coach of the varsity football team.

Sawyer replaced the retiring Eddie Twyne following the end of the 2016 Manteo football season. He came to Roanoke Island after 12 years as head coach at Washington High School. This past season was a difficult one for the team as it compiled a 1-9 record, finishing 1-6 in conference play.

The Voice is attempting to reach out to Sawyer for comment.
