Back in 2018, First Flight High School mens basketball head coach (and now FFHS Athletic Director) Chad Williams brought a different kind of basketball tournament to his Kill Devil Hills gym — the “Good Guys vs. Cancer” Basketball Showcase. It was also chock full of top-notch high school hoop talent.

In that effort, Williams was inspired after the Nighthawks were invited to play in a Thanksgiving tournament in Asheville for the same important cause. Some of the inspiration was also close to home. At that point, Williams’ father Guy was battling cancer and he passed just weeks after that first tournament.

Now with the two-day 2021 version of the “Good Guys vs. Cancer” event right around the corner — slated for Dec. 10 and 11 at First Flight High School — Williams has posted this notice on Facebook.

“Make your plans now for Good Guys vs, Cancer!! There are a few VIP tickets remaining! Come and go reserved court-side tickets, t-shirt and access to hospitality room. https://gofan.co/app/events/425257?schoolid+NC7452.”

Nearly 20 teams are slated to play in the event, including such local squads as Manteo, Currituck and First Flight. The showcase begins with a Moravian Prep vs. Greenfield contest on Friday, Dec. 10 at 4:30 p.m. and ends on Saturday, Dec. 11 when First Flight tips off against Kinston at 9:00 p.m.

A fantastic idea from Coach Williams. I’m hoping for a large turnout in support of these teams of young men. I’m as hopeful for the support against Cancer.

God bless all of whom are involved, and my personal thanks.
