Sponsored by the OBX Women’s Adventure Club, the third Annual Polar Plunge for the Dare County Special Olympics, held in Kill Devil Hills on the morning of New Year’s Day, offered considerably more welcoming conditions than last year’s challenge.

With the sun shining, the air temperature in the mid-60s, and ocean water temperature in the low 50s, the day seemed almost springlike. One year ago, the skies were spitting rain and the ocean and air temperatures were both down in the mid-40s.

So it was probably no surprise that, according to Adventure Club founder Stephanie Anderson, there appeared to be a record turnout on Jan. 1, 2022.

Kathleen Morgan has been involved in fundraising for the Special Olympics since her high school days, because, she said, “They are special people.” She stressed that all money raised today will go directly to the Dare County Special Olympics.

Kill Devil Hills Lifeguard Supervisor David Elder gave a quick safety talk, advising the plunge participants to take a deep breath before diving into a wave. The muscles in the stomach and chest, he explained, contract when immersed in cold water. By having lungs filled with air, it gives the muscles a chance to adjust and allow normal breathing to resume.

The OBX Women’s Adventure Club offers a wide variety of adventures for local women — everything from martial arts workshops to kayaking to biking and hiking trips.

“We’re now up to about 330 members,” Anderson said.
