By on January 20, 2022

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office posted this detailed storm update on its Facebook page at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 20.

One recent change is that along with the Mainland, the Northern part of Dare County is now under a Winter Storm Warning as well. The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City is predicting “heavy mixed precipitation” for the area with “total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.”

Here is the update.

Mainland and Northern Dare are now under the Winter Storm Warning that starts at midnight tonight and runs until 7 AM Saturday. While we are under the warning tomorrow, we may not see much ice and snow until Friday night as our temperatures will be above freezing most of the day.

We now have a Coastal Flood Advisory from 7 AM Friday to 1 PM Saturday with potential for 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level inundation. Impacts are possible oceanside from Duck to Cape Hatteras and soundside, mainly along Hatteras Village.

A High Surf Advisory is set for 7 AM tomorrow until 1 PM Saturday with large breaking waves of 6 to 9 feet expected in the surf zone. Lastly, we have a Wind Advisory set from 1 PM tomorrow until 7 AM Saturday for northerly winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph across Dare County.

The next National Weather Service briefing is scheduled by 8 AM Friday morning, Jan. 21.
