Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Dare County

Flood, surf advisories added for Dare County

Update: The National Weather Service has now issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory for the Northern Outer Banks and Hatteras Island, oceanside areas north of Cape Hatteras and soundside areas south of Rodanthe. The advisories are in effect from Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. until Sunday, Jan. 30 at 7 a.m.

For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6-9’ are expected in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, 1-2’ of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Some roads and low-is lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes adjacent to the waterfront may experience shallow flooding. Minor ocean overwash possible along portions of NC 12 between Oregon Inlet and Buxton, especially during times of high tide. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.


The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City reports that there is now a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Dare County from midnight on Friday Jan. 28 until 2 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 29.

Snow is expected, with total accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with winds gusting as high as 45 miles per hour across the Northern Outer Banks. Caution is advised for those traveling.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Visitors Bureau will hold a public meeting to review the plans for an Outer Banks Event Center. The meeting will take place on Monday, June 6, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Keeper’s Galley building at Haven on the Banks, 115 Dove Street, Nags Head North Carolina 27959.

Still in the conceptual phase, the Event Center is intended to provide suitable and flexible space for year-round events, concerts, sports, meetings, smaller tradeshows, galas and any number of other uses. Learn more about the benefits for visitors and residents and how the Event Center is planned to complement the new Soundside boardwalk that is being designed.
