Dare County faces storm conditions for several days

By on May 8, 2022

(Dare County Sheriff’s Department)

This summary of storm conditions facing Dare County over the next few days has been issued by the Dare County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of Sunday, May 8. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has also issued a Wind Advisory in effect from the afternoon of Sunday May 8 until Tuesday May 10 at 8 a.m.

Here is the Sheriff’s report.

We have a Coastal Flood Warning along with High Wind and Surf advisories in place. Conditions will lead to ocean overwash that is expected to impact beachfront properties and roadways around the time of high tide beginning late tonight and continuing with each high tide into mid-week.

Beach-adjacent properties and roads (including NC 12) could be inundated and impassable for prolonged periods. Greatest impacts are expected where dune structures are most vulnerable, mainly on Hatteras Island. However, prolonged storm duration could bring overwash impacts beyond “the usual locations.”

Soundside impacts are expected to be minimal in Dare County. High winds from the north to northeast with peak gusts at 45 to 55 mph along the coast Monday night, could bring isolated power outages. Very dangerous marine conditions with seas 10-15+ ft and Gale Force winds offshore are expected through midweek. These conditions will make the ocean/beach hazardous well into next week.

Please keep an eye on the weather especially when traveling. Everyone should stay out of the ocean and exercise caution if they need to be on the beach.
