May 10 at 7 pm update: Great news!! After a conversation with Walt Disney, we agreed there was a lack of communication about our staffing situation, and we will be starting Dr Strange this coming Friday night, May 13th.
May 10 at 10:55 am: A series of recent posts on the Pioneer Theater Facebook page by owner Buddy Creef explains the temporary closure of the iconic 104-year-old Manteo cinema. These posts started on May 6 with a message that due to a lack of staff and feeling “sluggish after a medical procedure,” Creef was planning on shutting down the theater until May 10. The most recent post, on the morning of May 10, details Creef’s argument with Disney’s decision to cancel a three-week booking of Dr. Strange in the theater because it was closed for the movie’s opening weekend. In terms of the current status of the theater, this May 9 post has the information.
“Well, we were planning on being back open tomorrow night, Tuesday, May 10th, featuring the Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; however, Walt Disney Studios saw our Facebook post and decided to cancel our contract to show this movie for three weeks because we were unable screen this feature opening weekend. Soooo, we are currently closed trying to figure out what we are going to do until May 26th. If we come up with a plan B, we will let you know asap, but worst-case scenario, we will be screening the new Top Gun movie starting Friday, May 27th, and will hopefully have the new Jurassic World movie after that. Sorry for the unexpected and unprecedented studio change in contract terms and schedule. I love all of you, I am so sorry, I am so embarrassed, and, as always, Peace, Love and Popcorn. Please like and share this post to get the word out about our unfortunate change in schedule.”
