Signs of life at the KDH Target site

This video by Charlie Burroughs/OBX Photo and Video shows signs of activity at the old Kmart site in Kill Devil Hills that will eventually be the home of a new Target store. There had been some speculation that Target was abandoning the project, but that is incorrect.

The Voice reached out to Target for comment on the work being done on the site and received the standard boilerplate statement from a corporate spokesperson. It stated that “I can confirm that Target has plans to open the Outer Banks store next year. We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the Outer Banks community with this new Target store. Located at 1901 N Croatan Highway, the store will be nearly 120,000 square feet. As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share – including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”

I do hope they’re able to finish the project and open the store…the empty building is an eye sore. That said, where are the employees for said Target going to come from? Small businesses from Duck to Hatteras are struggling to find reliable help…just curious, are they bringing in their own employees and housing them at a Target rental? What about all the trash that will be generated in that parking lot (as it happened with the old K-Mart)…is a plan being formulated to keep the area clean before it ends in our coastal areas? Just wondering.

I hope I don’t see or hear any local celebrate this news. The addition of Target, while providing jobs, is a negative. I also would expect anybody who poopoos developments and clearing trees would avoid this place. But I suspect the anti growth faction will be the first in line looking for bargains. You can’t have it both ways.

That empty building looks much better than subdivisions or rental houses

“The addition of Target, while providing jobs, is a negative.”

Interested to hear how providing stable, year round employment, with fair pay and benefits is a negative.

What should have been done with the empty property?

What exactly does “safe” mean in terms of a store built in 2022? Is it possible to build a dangerous store and obtain a certificate of occupancy. Maybe they are comparing it to the 15+ bedroom homes on the KDH oceanfront that are hotels without any of the commercial safety features that are required in commercial lodging. This store is not being built for locals so no one should think they care about us. @Ben never is correct. This is far worse than any housing development. It certainly will kill off more local businesses.

Why is it a negative? There was a Kmart there beforehand, so it’s just replacing an old, crusty building with a new, clean one, selling the same stuff Kmart did in it’s heyday.

Everyone was wringing their hands at the prospect of a Lowes, but I think most everyone would agree that was a great addition to the community.

Ben, what would you do instead? Put up more mini-hotels? This big box building was erected for K-Mart 30+ plus years ago and the best use for it is another BB store. I for one is glad there will be a little competition for Wally-World. (I was here when the K-Mart opened and immediately put Roses across the street out of business!)

Looking forward to this store opening next year. Target does a good job of providing a good selection of quality products at competitive prices. And recently they have started offering good choices in food products. Yep the OBX has many grocery stores, but it’s all about the selection of products.

I wonder where the staff will live? Where I work there is very little help and the ones who are there are overwhelmed and barely hanging in there due to having to do it all. There is no where affordable to live. I for one, love Target and will find this to be a refreshing change, I just hope they’ll be able to find enough staff.

Just another step to utter ruin of the area..

So many people are afraid if change. You can’t stop progress. Will be so much better than the horrible Kmart.

Another store at this point really doesn’t matter. The county is a wealthy county and the ruination of the beach and sound areas is not beneath the greed. I’m glad people will have a place to buy cheap clothing and goods. Climate change is rearing its ugly head and all this will be in ruins soon enough. Better enjoy the next 20 years for that’s about all that’s left.

This is progress plain and simple..and you old crustaceons..this is 2022, not 1950..get over change. It happens whether you like it or not.

Larry is “right on”. If I had the money I would do what he suggests. Kill Devil Hills has the money and this would be a correct BIG step in the right direction. Will it happen, no but we can all dream, sometimes dreams do come true so let’s all dream.
