August 4, 2022 Update: The Avon Property Owners Association would like to offer a $1,000.00 (one thousand dollar) reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the people who stole the Welcome to Avon Sign. Please contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 M-F 8:30-5:00, Dare County Communications 252-473-3444 anytime or Dare County Crime Line at 252-473-3111.
The Dare County Sheriff’s Department yesterday posted this report on the disappearance on a rather conspicuous sign. It is seeking the public’s help.
Here are the details.
On July 31, it was reported to the Sheriff’s Office that the sign on the north end of Avon, NC, that says, “Welcome to Avon, Historically Named Kinnakeet,” had been stolen sometime on or around July 30. This sign is approximately 6 feet by 4 feet and would have taken a moment to remove and steal since it was bolted to the posts that were left behind.
Dare County and the towns that reside in it take pride in our area and try to make it a great experience for those who visit. This sign is part of letting those who come here know where they are, but also provides little history lesson as well.
If you have any information on who may have taken this sign, please contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 M-F 8:30 to 5:00 or Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444 anytime. We greatly appreciate any assistance in locating those who felt the need to take the sign and a piece of history with them.

I’m sure it was a visitor right? I mean people on here always blame them for everything. Probably plotted this for a year since their last vacation, scouted the sign, figured out exactly what size wrench it would take… villain…

Spanky:
I’d put a few bucks on it being a visitor. They probably got drunk or whatever and saw it and had the great idea to grab it and take it back up north and brag about it to their friends. They’re probably smart enough to put it on Facebook or Instagram or whatever and brag about it on one of those sites too.
