September 29 at 6 p.m.The Coastal Studies Institute is pleased to announce the revival of a beloved favorite, Science on the Sound! This monthly, in-person, lecture series brings perspectives from all over the state and highlights coastal topics in northeastern North Carolina.
Dr. Reide Corbett, a coastal oceanographer and geochemist, ECU Integrated Coastal Programs Dean, and Executive Director of the Coastal Studies Institute, will kick-off the revamped series on September 29, 2022. In his presentation entitled “Beach Nourishment on the OBX: Addressing the what, why, and potential impacts.”, Dr. Corbett will talk about a hot topic here on the Outer Banks and within other coastal municipalities.
Since the initial Nags Head beach nourishment project in 2011, the Outer Banks community has seen a growing number of projects across the beaches here. Corbett’s presentation will provide some background on the use of beach nourishment as a soft engineering approach to shoreline erosion and possible ecological impacts to the beach associated with these projects.
Dr. Corbett’s presentation will take place on the ECU Outer Banks Campus on September 29, 2022, at 6 PM. He will be followed by Dr. Chris Oakley on October 27 and Dr. Mike Muglia on November 17, 2022. Each lecture is free of charge, and all are welcome to attend. The program will also be live streamed and a recorded version will be available for later viewing on the YouTube Channel.
