New 7,500 sq. ft. candy store headed to Kitty Hawk

Speculation centers on Sugar Kingdom

Is a Sugar Kingdom coming to Kitty Hawk?

Construction is underway of a two-story 7,500-square-foot retail candy store with 24 parking spaces at 5201 N Croatan Highway in Kitty Hawk. The development is located on a one-acre piece of property located just south of Outer Banks Furniture and across U.S.158 from the former Sentara Medical Center and future Kitty Hawk Police Department.

The property is located in the Beach Commercial Zone, where such a project is a permitted use. The site plan received unanimous approval by the Kitty Hawk Town Council in January and according to Planning Director Rob Testerman, a building permit for the project was issued on August 5.

Attempts by the Voice to reach the property owner, which according to Dare County tax records is S&S Properties in Virginia Beach, were unsuccessful. However, the company shares a Virginia Beach address with Sunsations, LLC, the same property owners of the Sugar Kingdom stores in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. There has been considerable speculation on social media and elsewhere that the new candy store will be a Sugar Kingdom franchise.

According to a January Kitty Hawk planning staff report to the council, 59.2 percent of the parcel would be left for open space.

Testerman said the applicant is not required to provide a business name until it is ready to open and would need to submit a “business information form” to the Kitty Hawk Fire Department. He added that a few months ago, the applicant submitted incomplete paperwork for a sign permit that indicated the store would be “Sugar Planet,” but no revised application packet has been submitted to date.

“Once a sign permit is issued, they would be locked in on the name unless they got a new sign permit to change the sign,” Testerman said in an email response to the Voice.

This is the worst thing I have ever heard. The person who is head of these ridiculous oversized worthless places needs to be cut down. We all know what fuels these types of people and it is greed. It’s obviously a front to hide whatever else is happening behind the scenes. Kitty hawk needs some restrictions for this type of irresponsible development. No one needs sugar which is basically the first known gateway drug given to us at young ages. Go to hell sugar kingdom
