First Flight, Manteo women’s cross-country teams finish among top 5 in state championships

Both the First Flight and Manteo women’s cross-country teams finished among the top five at State Cross-Country Championships in Kernersville, NC this past on the weekend of Nov. 5.

The First Flight women’s team ran to fourth place in a hard-fought 3A championship race. Final scores were close, with West Region teams North Lincoln, West Henderson, and North Buncombe (94) edging out the Nighthawks (96). Lucy Stecher (9th), Morgan Miller (10th), Tatum Dermatas (24th), Chloe Wienert (29th), Moira Furr (44th), Bekah Newell (70th), and Alexa Hallac (79th) scored for the Lady Nighthawks, with Stecher and Miller earning individual honors on the 14-runner All-State Cross-Country Team.

The men’s team finished 18th in a 21-team field. Jackson Hannon (26th), Judah Lacroix (84th), Alex Lutz (115th), Deacon Parker (137th), Karter Tucker (141st), Max Roberts (162nd), and Bricen Williams (164th) scored for the Nighthawks.

Kudos also to the Manteo High School women’s cross-country team which made a strong showing in the championships, finishing fifth in the 2A competition. On the individual level, Madison Flynn finished sixth overall in the state.

The Manteo men’s team logged a 16th-place finish in the state championships.

Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s Colin Midgett (112)  competed in the 1A State Championship.
