The Elizabethan Gardens hires Education Programs Manager

The Elizabethan Gardens is pleased to announce that Laura Hensley will join the Gardens as Programs Manager. Hensley, who currently serves as Curator of Education of the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island, will start her new role on November 21. She will develop and lead the Gardens educational programming for adults, students, and pre-k early learners.

“With grant support from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and Cannon Foundation, the Gardens is moving forward on projects that will allow us to broaden our current educational programming,” said Gardens Executive Director Theresa Armendarez. “Laura’s commitment to the community, perspective and experience will help the Gardens build an education program that is aligned with the needs of the local school community and visitors.”

Hensley has various experience in education including formal classroom teaching, informal education in after-school programs, summer camps, and developing programs. She moved back to her home state of North Carolina last year after working in Mississippi developing programs for the Mississippi Aquarium. She lived in Alaska for 11 years working in outdoor recreation and education while getting her master’s degree in biology. Her passion is environmental education and connecting people to the natural world through hands-on learning experiences.

“I am excited to be a part of this new endeavor at the Elizabethan Gardens and hope to continue connecting youth and the community to nature in this beautiful space,” Hensley said.

NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS:  BIDDER PRE-QUALIFICATION REQUEST:  Barnhill Contracting has been selected as the Construction Manager at Risk by Dare County and is seeking to pre-qualify construction trade and specialty contractors to submit bids for furnishing Labor, Material, Equipment, and Other for the new “Dare County – EMS 1 / Fire Station 14” (KDH) located in Kill Devil Hills, NC.  PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The scope of the project encompasses approximately 36,000 sqft of new construction and 18,000 sqft of demolition on a 3.5-acre site located at the 1630 N Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, NC. The project includes masonry bearing walls supporting a Standing Seam Metal Roof over Light Gauge Trusses housing administrative, living and support spaces along with 6 apparatus bays. Principal trade and specialty contractors are solicited for the following Bid Packages: BP750 – Turnkey Siding. Additional Packages may be added and/or deleted at the discretion of the Construction Manager. Historically underutilized business participation is encouraged.
